Report published on HP 14 classification of mirror entries in the List of Wastes
Depending on its composition, waste from mirror entries has to be categorized as hazardous or non-hazardous. The hazard property ‘ecotoxic’ (HP 14) can be evaluated based on the content of hazardous substances in the respective waste or using ecotoxicity tests with samples and eluates of this waste. At the EU level, specific requirements for the HP 14 classification of mirror entries in the List of Wastes based on testing are lacking. Recommendations for the ecotoxicological characterisation of wastes have been published in several member states including Germany (‘Recommendations for the ecotoxicological characterization of wastes’, UBA 2013).
The objective of the present project, which was initiated and funded by the German Environment Agency (UBA), was to elaborate proposals for updating and further developing the ‘Recommendations for the ecotoxicological characterization of wastes’. Based on the results of a literature search different biotest-based approaches for HP 14 classification were compared in a European context. Initial suggestions were made for an update and further development of the UBA recommendations. These suggestions were reviewed during sampling, sample preparation and ecotoxicity testing of 10 waste samples from mirror entries. Considering the results of the experimental work and discussions with the project advisory group, the initial suggestions were further elaborated. The final report of the project is now available (in English and German):
