New publication: Integrated evaluation concept to assess the efficacy of advanced wastewater treatment processes

February 2017

In cooperation with several partners, a multidisciplinary concept was developed for assessing the efficacy of advanced wastewater treatment methods for removal of micropollutants. This concept integrates (1) chemical parameters (the removal of selected indicator substances and the formation of transformation products), (2) ecotoxicological parameters (the assessment of ecotoxicity using in vitro tests), and (3) microbiological parameters (the removal of pathogens and antibiotic resistant bacteria). The usability of the concept was demonstrated for a pilot plant that applied ozonation and granular activated carbon filtration.

For additional information, see the publication in Environmental Science & Technology:

Ternes, T.A., Prasse, C., Eversloh, C.L., Knopp, G., Cornel, P., Schulte-Oehlmann, U., Schwartz, T., Alexander, J., Seitz, W., Coors, A., Oehlmann, J. (2017). Integrated evaluation concept to assess the efficacy of advanced wastewater treatment processes for the elimination of micropollutants and pathogens. Environmental Science & Technology 51, 308-319.

The study was performed within the project Transrisk (FKZ 02WRS1275), which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the framework ‘Risk management of emerging compounds and pathogens in the water cycle’ (RiSKWa).
