New publications on the effects of plant protection products on soil organisms

December 2025

The collaboration between the Marie Skłodowska-Curie International Training Networks ARISTO and PRORISK, both funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme and with the contribution of ECT, has resulted in two scientific publications.

Soil biodiversity baseline survey (BioDive4Soil)

November 2025

The value of soil biodiversity has long been underestimated, although it plays an essential role in healthy functioning of our ecosystems. Soil organisms contribute to nutrient cycling and carbon storage in soils, mix soil layers and help retain rainwater. However, numerous factors, such as soil contamination, unsustainable land use and climate change, have impacts on […]

Report published on the evaluation of soil biodiversity via DNA from soil organism samples

October 2023

Germany still lacks a nationwide and standardised survey of soil organisms, although a comprehensive infrastructure for such a survey is available with approx. 800 permanent soil monitoring sites (Bodendauerbeobachtungsflächen, BDF). At present, not all federal states perform biodiversity surveys on their permanent soil monitoring sites. This is most likely due to the fact that the […]

Further development of toxicity tests with soil organisms – protection of biodiversity in soils

December 2018

The project objective was to identify and quantify uncertainties that occur in the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of pesticides, specifically for the soil compartment. The project was based on the assessment that the general approach of employing surrogate species and experimental setups to assess the effects of pesticides has certain shortcomings that affect the outcome […]

Determination and analysis of the soil quality in the context of the implementation and further development of the National Strategy on Biodiversity

January 2011

The aim of this project was the improvement of the preconditions for the protection of the habitat function of soil as described in § 2 of the German Federal Soil Protection Act (1998), in particular in two ways: first, suitable biological indicators (i.e. organism groups) for the assessment of soil quality had to be identified. […]

Testing and optimisation of ecotoxicological test methods for routine use (ERNTE)

January 2011

Despite efforts to include ecotoxicological tests as an integral components of the assessment of contaminated land, most decisions regarding soil remediation or natural attenuation monitoring and/or assessment still rely on the results of chemical residue analyses. The German Federal Soil Protection Act (1998) stipulated the protection of natural soil functions, including the function as habitat […]
