Further development of biotest methods for evaluation of the hazard property ‘ecotoxic’ (HP 14) of waste

According to Directive 2008/98/EG in connection with Decision 2000/532/EC (European List of Wastes, LoW), waste has to be classified as hazardous or non-hazardous. The LoW contains ‘absolute hazardous entries’ (wastes that are hazardous without further assessment), ‘absolute non-hazardous entries’ (wastes that are non-hazardous without further assessment) and ‘mirror entries’ (wastes that can be classified as […]

Review on microplastics in the environment

In the recently published review, information on sources (with a specific focus on personal care products) and fate of microplastic particles in the aquatic and terrestrial environment, and on their uptake and effects, mainly in aquatic organisms, is evaluated.

Microplastics in the environment originate from a variety of sources. First estimates indicate that abrasion and fragmentation of larger plastic items and materials containing synthetic polymers are likely to be most relevant.

Registration procedures for substances of high concern: fate, behaviour, degradation and potential accumulation of potentially persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) substances in aquatic meoscosms

Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) compounds deserve specific attention when considering the hazard, which these substances might cause to the environment. These circumstances are taken into account by the European Union in the REACH regulation. For example, for persistent compounds it is difficult to predict long-term effects by established risk assessment procedures, since low degradation […]
