11th International Symposium on Enchytraeidae

Haus Ohrbeck, 49124 Georgsmarienhütte, Germany
Near Osnabrück

July 25-27, 2014

“Dear colleagues, dear all,

All the best for 2014! It’s time to start preparing for the 11th International Symposium on Enchytraeidae (ISE XI), to be held this year at “Haus Ohrbeck” in Georgsmarienhütte near Osnabrück, Germany, July 25-27, 2014. With this circular we provide information and deadlines.

Enchytraeids?

Enchytraeids  or  ‘potworms’ are small  relatives  of  earthworms distributed  worldwide. Most of the species are soil-dwelling but some live in aquatic sediments. The symposium has a traditional focus on taxonomy and applied soil ecology, but actually it covers all aspects  of  the  biology  of  enchytraeids,  including  developmental  biology,  physiology, phylogeny, and ecotoxicology. The symposium intends to be an occasion to share and to discuss  new  findings  and  views  about  these  interesting  worms  while  promoting  a friendly interaction among experts, newcomers, or any other kind of participant. There is no better way to familiarize with this animal group!

Schedule and contents

The symposium starts with supper on Thursday July 24th at 18:15 and ends with lunch on  Sunday  July  27th.  Sessions  begin  on  Friday  morning  after  registration  and  they include oral and poster presentations. However, other forms of sharing knowledge and ideas are welcome, for example roundtable discussions. If you have a suggestion, please let us know! A precise schedule will be fixed later. There will be lots of time to study the worms  under  the  microscope,  dead  or  alive,  weird  or  unknown  forms,  or  just  the ordinary species, and to discuss taxonomic peculiarities. We are grateful to the Zoology Department of the University Osnabrück for providing stereolupes and microscopes. On Saturday  afternoon  we  may  have  a  guided  tour  downtown  Osnabrück  or  some sightseeing in the country.

Location

Haus  Ohrbeck  is  an  acknowledged  residential  adult  education  center  of  the  Land Niedersachsen  (Lower  Saxony),  run  by  the  Catholic  Diocese  of  Osnabrück  and  the Franciscan  Order.  Here  symposium  sessions,  room  and  board  will  comfortably  be  all under the same roof, and at a very reasonable price. Besides, Haus Ohrbeck is situated in a beautiful and relaxing rural landscape but also close to the city of Osnabrück with its famous historical center and good shopping opportunities.

Price

For  a  full  stay  Haus  Ohrbeck  charges  altogether  (i.e.  meals  included)  between €  194,-  and  €  230,-  depending  on  the  room  (single/double,  with/without  shower). Participants that do not stay overnight pay € 139,- for the meals. We will have four daily meals,  breakfast,  lunch,  coffee+cakes  (“Kaffee  und  Kuchen”),  and  supper.  Vegetarian meals  at  request.  An  additional  €  20,-  will  cover  expenses  of  the  symposium organization. Payment on arrival.
